The 2015 Special Olympics World Games are being staged in Los Angeles July 25-Aug. 2, 2015. With 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches representing 177 countries, along with 30,000 volunteers and an anticipated 500,000 spectators, the World Games will be the largest sports and humanitarian event anywhere in the world in 2015, and the single biggest event in L.A. since the 1984 Olympic Games.
The 2015 Special Olympics World Games, with the unparalleled spirit, enthusiasm, teamwork, joy and displays of courage and skill that are hallmarks of all Special Olympics events, will feature 25 Olympic-style sports in venues throughout the Los Angeles region. The Opening Ceremony, to be held July 25, 2015 in the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, is expected to attract 80,000 spectators.
ESPN will bring coverage of World Games to millions of fans around the world. Honorary Chairs of the Games are President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and California Governor Jerry Brown serving as Honorary Hosts.

Throughout the nine days of inspiring competition, the 2015 World Games will present special events that offer a variety of festive, educational and engaging programs for athletes, guests, families and fans.
The inspiring Opening Ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 25, 2015 in the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the only venue in the world to host two Olympiads (1932 and 1984), two Super Bowls (I and VII) and one World Series (1959). The star-studded show will celebrate the true stars of the Games - the athletes of Special Olympics - with exciting entertainment, the Parade of Athletes and the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and lighting of the Special Olympics cauldron. Broadcast internationally by ESPN, fans around the world will be able to participate in this memorable start to the World Games! Performers at the opening ceremony include Stevie Wonder, Avril Lavigne, Nicole Scherzinger, O.A.R., Cody Simpson (featuring Special Olympics athlete Breanna Bogucki and YouTube sensation Madison Tevlin), J Balvin, and Reach Up LA theme song creator Siedah Garrett. Appearances by Jimmy Kimmel, Eva Longoria, Michael Phelps, Yao Ming, Greg Louganis, Stephanie McMahon, and Lauren Potter are also scheduled.
Awards are an important part of the Special Olympics competition experience. Special Olympics believes in recognition of each athlete’s efforts and presents medals for first through third places, and ribbons signifying fourth through eighth places. Honored Guests and local dignitaries will be invited to share the honor of presenting awards during the World Games, at awards ceremonies that will take place at each sporting venue.
The Closing Ceremony will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015. The final festivities of the Games will pay tribute to the athletes, families, coaches, volunteers and supporters who have come together for a successful and inspirational event. World-class entertainers and celebrities will headline the celebration.
